Add Page Numbers
Number your PDF pages
Free online PDF page numbering. This tool adds a page number to every page of a PDF, starting at 1, at the bottom center, the bottom right or the top center of the page. It runs in your browser and the file is not uploaded.
How to Add Page Numbers to PDF
- Choose a PDF or drop it on the box above. The tool takes one PDF at a time.
- Pick where the number goes: Bottom Center, Bottom Right or Top Center.
- Click Add Page Numbers. The numbered PDF is downloaded as a new file, and the file you chose is not changed.
All processing happens in your browser. Your files never leave your device.
What PDF Page Numbering Does Here
- Every page gets a number: 1 on the first page, 2 on the second, and so on to the last page.
- The number is plain digits in gray 10 pt Helvetica. It sits 30 pt, about 1 cm, from the bottom or the top edge of the page. At the bottom right it starts 50 pt, about 1.8 cm, from the right edge.
- The pages are not redrawn. Text in your PDF stays text, and the number is drawn on top of whatever is already at that place.
- On a page that is stored turned, as many scans are, the number goes where you chose on the page as you see it, and it stands upright.
Limits
- Three positions only: bottom center, bottom right and top center.
- Numbering always starts at 1 and covers every page. You cannot choose a starting number, skip the first page or number a range of pages.
- Digits only. There is no "Page 1 of 10" form, and no choice of font, size or color.
- Page numbers that are already in the PDF are not found or removed.
- A protected PDF cannot be numbered, whether it asks for a password to open or only forbids changes. The page tells you so.
- The tool sets no file size limit. The whole PDF is loaded into your browser's memory, so how large a file you can number depends on your device.
- It takes PDF files only. To number the pages of a spreadsheet or a Word document, turn it into a PDF first with Excel to PDF or Word to PDF.
- It adds page numbers, not pages. To add pages to a PDF, join it with another PDF in Merge PDF.
What Happens to Your File
The PDF is read and numbered by code running in this page, and the result is saved through a normal browser download. Nothing is uploaded: the page sends no request that contains your file. Once the page has loaded, the tool also works with the internet connection turned off.
